The focus of this course is to explore the impact of data and information tools on life and politics, as well as to consider the negative effects and ethical controversies they bring. The development of artificial intelligence is based on data, and data comes from history. Data is a powerful weapon that can change our perception of the world, but algorithms are not neutral and may instead solidify the flaws in human society. Therefore, this course will introduce basic statistical knowledge and the R programming language, and will utilize data provided by the Taiwan Election and Democratization Study (TEDS) for students to engage in practical exercises.

In addition, this course does not require students to have a background in basic statistics but aims to improve students' digital competencies. Therefore, this course has three goals for quantitative research knowledge: first, to understand the relationship between models and theories; second, to practice using R to run a statistic model; third, to perform data analysis and hypothesis verification. On the one hand, students can experience the convenience brought by the development of information technology from the course and reflect on the digital problems of the new generation brought about by information technologies.

By the way, this course does not discuss epistemology and methodology issues of political sciences. Therefore, students who reject quantitative data analysis should not reluctantly take this course.
